INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Employees are among the most important determinants and leading factors that determine the success of an organization in a competitive environment. Commitment of employees can be an important instrument for improving the performance of organizations. Commitment is the bond employees experience with their organization. Employees who are committed to their organization generally feel a connection with their organization, feel that they fit in and, feel they understand the goals of the organization. The added value of such employees is that they tend to be more determined in their work, show relatively high productivity and are more proactive in offering their support. If managed properly employee commitment can lead to beneficial consequences such as increased effectiveness, performance, and productivity and decreased turnover and absenteeism at both the individual and organizational levels. An employee who is satisfied with his job would perform his duties well and be committed to his job, and subsequently to his organization. Thus, between commitment and the level of the organization the most important relations are a better communication and less illness; at the level of the individual employee the commitment to change and to take part very actively in change processes, bring up new ideas is important. These conclusions are in line with the literature. Commitment is strongly connected with colleagues and the style of management and could be seen as an important asset of the learning company.

This study is about employee commitment in relation with employee satisfaction with special reference to Forest Industries Travancore Ltd. FIT is a Kerala Government company established in the year 1946 is engaged in manufacture of wooden furniture and joineries (Windows, Doors, Ventilators etc.). It is located at Thaikkattukara near Aluva, which is 15 Km North of Kochi and 2 Km south of Aluva by the side of National Highway 47.    

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Organizational commitment is most often defined as a strong desire to remain a member of a particular organization; a willingness to exert high levels of effort on behalf of the organization; and a definite belief in, and acceptance of the values and goals of the organization. In other words, this is an attitude reflecting employees’ loyalty to their organization and is an ongoing process through which organizational participants express their concern for the organization and its continued success and well-being.

Today’s work place is enveloped by the fear of downsizing, loss of job security, overwhelming change in technology, and the stress of having to do more with less(need to), establish the type of caring, spirited workplace that will ignite employee commitment. In the above backdrop, it seems pertinent to know and understand more about the organizational commitment. According to R.T. Mowday, ‘A strong desire to remain as a member of a particular organization, and a definite belief in, and acceptance of the values and goals of the organization means organizational commitment.’

The particular study was conducted to find out employee commitment and satisfaction of the employees in Forest Industries Travancore Limited (FIT), Aluva.

1.2 NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

  • This study makes an attempt to understand the employee commitment and satisfaction of employees.
  • This study helps to analyse the overall functioning of the organization.
  • It also provides suggestions for the improvement and development of Forest Industries Travancore Limited.

1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Organizational commitment refers to employees’ loyalty to the organization, their willingness to work on behalf of the organization. Committed employee is a growth edging for an organization. For, he/she is expected to contribute for the increase in organization productivity. This study attempts to identify the level of commitment of employees and satisfaction of employees at FIT (Forest Industries Travancore), Aluva.

1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

  • To identify the factors that affect employee commitment.
  • To assess whether employee commitment leads to employee satisfaction.
  • To find out the commitment among the employees.
  • To make appropriate suggestion to enhance employee commitment.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

  • This study may also help to analyse the commitment of employees in FIT, Aluva.
  • The management can take appropriate decisions to enhance commitment.
  • It helps to understand the career path and maturation level of workplace.
  • It is useful for understanding the functions of the organization.

1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

            As usual for any research, this study was also having certain limitations as mentioned below;

  • An in-depth study could not be carried out due to shortage of time.
  • Most of the employees do not provide correct information.
  • It was not easy task to get information.
  • Certain employees have negative attitude towards the study.
  • Employees are from different education level.
  • The individual prospective appears to be different.

LITERATURE REVIEW

        No research study is complete and justified unless it is focused around certain theories, hypothetical ideas and empirical findings. So also this research study started with a review of the conceptual theories and empirical evidences for a detailed understanding of employee loyalty as a research topic of interest.
