How Buzzword develops self deprecating attitude and leads to crippling side effects?

Introduction:

Buzzword refers to a word or a phrase that becomes very popular for a period of time. Buzzwords always derive from internet in technical terms, we also can call them as internet slang words, they often have much of the original technical meaning removed, being simply used to impress others, such "buzzwords" may still have the full meaning when used in certain technical contexts .

The buzzwords from the Internet reflect the netizen's humor, not only to humor, but also to their self deprecating attitude. Self mockery is the wisdom of a language, but it tends to be negative and gloomy. In other words, the popularity of buzzwords is not about how novel they are, but rather to express their mental states that are difficult to show to others.

In modern society, increasing number of people tend to use buzzword in order to keep the steps with society, we are more willing to use buzzword to express our thought instead of using formal language, because using buzzword seems pop and cool, easy to use and can be used in wide range. Some buzzword, for example, C.H.A.O.S” refers to not inviting guests to one’s house because it is too messy or cluttered, cinematic narcolepsy is the chronic involuntary sleep condition induced by viewing movies, particularly those shown on a large screen, and Hurried child syndrome refers to a condition in which parents overschedule their children's lives, push them hard for academic success, and expect them to behave and react as miniature adults. These buzzword are normally appear in daily life in English speaking country. These short words are easily to represent the meaning of a long statement, convenient and personality. But most of these words reflect the negative side of us, such as CHAOS represent the people whose home is too messy or cluttered, it doesn’t play a positive role.

how do these words emerge?

The origin of buzzwords can be seen in Hallgren & Weiss as coming from business students studying at Harvard University as a way to help them gain better results from their studies. Such language terms were collated and then became what we know today as "buzzwords". During the early years of buzzwords, buzzwords were used by students as a means to enable them to quickly recall items of importance. As an example, "If his analysis does not highlight the most important problems he has 'poor focus', and if he fails to emphasize important recommendations he will be accused of 'tinkering'. If the sequence for the 'implementation' of the recommendations is not good it is a matter of 'poor timing'. To succeed, the student must 'get on top of the problem'. He must 'hit the problem' and not 'shadow box' it. If he cannot do these things he might just as well 'turn in his suit'".

Students have used many different buzzwords to describe the situation that they are in, and how this might affect a moment in their everyday life. From studying these business students, Hallgren & Weiss noticed that business students could speak with apparent authority. It also seemed as if using the right buzzword was more important than what the student came up with as an answer.

Buzzwords have a strong impact on business culture and are commonly used in business speak. It seems a good origin, but until today, the buzzword changes its original function and evolve to a new kind of product, which can briefly describe a group of people or a phenomenon appear in our daily life by using a short word or a short sentence instead of a long explanation.
