The Giver comparison

The Giver is a story written by Lois Lowey. It is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a society that has gone to sameness. He is selected as the Receiver Of Memory and has the power to change the way his society works. Later, there was a movie made by Phillip Noyce on this story. Like all novels that become movies there were many similarities and differences in the plot line. These can be seen in the characters and the plot.

Some ways The Giver book and movie are same are they both portray the same people. The main characters were Jonas, Fiona, Asher and The Giver. Despite the similarities there were also many differences. One of the differences is that the character ages were different. In the book Jonas, Asher and Fiona characters were just 12 when they received their assignments but in the movie they were 18 years old. Another difference was in the relationship between Jonas and Fiona, which played a huge role in the ending of the movie. Overall the character personalities were different as well. In the book The Chief Elder seemed very nice and polite and did not play that big of a role in the story. But in the movie The Chief Elder acted as a villain, and played a much bigger role to keep the memories out of the community. Also Jonas’s mom was stricter and more firm in the movie compared to the book. Along with the characters the plot also had many similarities and difference between the two.

One similarity that stood out to me was that Jonas was chosen as The Receiver Of Memory in both of them. This is an important similarity because mostly the whole story is based on him changing his society’s ways of living. A difference between the movie and the book was that the jobs of Jonas’s friends were different. Fiona
