Freezing Points

Every pure substance has a characteristic temperature at which it melts.

This property of individual melting points can be used by chemists to identify substances.

Likewise, when a liquid pure substance cools, it freezes at a characteristic temperature. Freezing

points can be therefore be used to differentiate between methanol and water; methanol freezes

at -94°C, whereas water freezes at 0°C.

In this experiment, the pure substance to be studied is paradichlorobenzene, one type of moth repellant. You will first heat solid paradichlorobenzene until it melts and forms a liquid, then investigate the cooling of this liquid paradichlorobenzene (Part I). In Part ll you will reheat this substance to study the melting process. During the cooling and heating processes, temperature data will be recorded at regular intervals.
