Prohibition on US History
The 1920s was considered one of the most thriving eras in our time. Considering that there was lots of changes in music and life in general. During this time there has been expansions on freedoms. Individuals got to express themselves freely with dance and music through jazz and travel with the help of cars. African American people and women were becoming equal. Even though there were many great things happening there were some bad things taking place as well. Especially when the alcohol prohibition took place. Basically the production and distribution of alcohol has been banned from the United States. The government put this policy in action for many reasons. Even though the plan was for the greater good it was unpropitious causing the opposite effects that was planned for the U.S.
Much effort was done towards the amendment by organizations including the Anti-Saloon League and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. The plan was to help America’s future. That involved happier families, fewer industrial accidents, and a better moral tone. Most people believed the First World War had a big influence on the passing of the 18th Amendment. The idea was to put money towards “war fitness” rather than liquor. During the war, the national mood basically turned against alcohol. Lots of people thought that it was just wrong for others to be enjoying alcohol while others were fighting for their country. So the war allowed an easy passage for the act to be passed.
Prohibition groups were against the consumption of alcohol. The prohibition groups were mostly made up of women. The husbands were usually the providers of the home but they didn’t want them blowing their money on liquor. Their reasons were associated with public drinking establishments and saloons which were connected to prostitution and gambling. To them that had to come to an end and others didn't really care much about the problem. Many endorsed prohibition for reducing industrial accidents and increasing the efforts of workers. People wanted to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, and improve the hygiene and health of society. Some saw alcohol as a national problem. So the prohibition was a plan to help the United States to get out of the gutters.
Banning alcohol was supposed to make the U.S better. Actually it was the opposite. Prohibiting liquor has caused negative effects on society rather than the positive ones that were thought to happen. Crime during this time was on the rise. Many were making and selling alcohol on the black market. Even though the manufacture and transportation of the illegal beverage wasn't allowed, people could still possess and consume it without breaking the law. This caused many to become bootleggers.
