www.cliffsnotes.com:

In the “adventures of huckleberry Finn”, the character Jim is introduced as a gullible black slave and a person without sense. Even always being depicted as gullible, he always advises huck and constantly caring and protecting huck. For example, Jim once lied to the king and duke to protect huck from being in danger. Chapter 16 when huck tricked Jim to think that he was dead. Knowing Jim gullible behavior, he fell for the trick but later Huck and Jim are reunited. When Jim had seen huck he went into tears. Jim was upset once he discovered it was just a trick that huck was playing on him and called him “trash” for doing that to a friend. Huck apologizes to Jim (a slave). At this moment, Jim was treated as a human or equal from huck after constantly not being treated as one throughout the novel.

www.wikipedia.org:

the plot of the novel plays a great a role in the relationship between huck and Jim (a slave). The “adventure of Huckle berry Finn” is taken place in Missouri in the 18th century. The novel was published in 1884. Missouri during the 18th century was of course, a slave state, separating blacks as the inferior and white as the superior. As the inferior, it’s hard to get the respect that you already deserve. This has a great effect in the relationship between Huck and Jim. This explains why huck is ignorant and doesn’t see any of his offensive comments offensive at all. Chapter 14 Huck say “Jim had an uncommon level head for a nigger”. In modern day if someone would have said something even near that would be profound as racist. But “racism” didn’t exist back then, or at least to white people during these times.
