Question 1:

The major issue faced by Brrrd is that it lacks a specific focus and in-depth specialisation in both of its entertainment and functional aspects. This in turn makes the product lack a specific market position and a particular and effective target on customer segments. The issue in this case can be identified and discussed by using SWOT model.

The strength of Brrrd is that Brrrd combines both the fun and functional characteristics in language study. It has the characteristic and function of an artificial intelligence that could recognise mandarin and it could also figure out the difficult language points which make it as a highly functional tool. These are the differentiated features of Brrd.

The weakness is that Brrrd does not achieve high level of specialisation on both the fun and functional aspects of the product. This makes it as a product lacking specific market position and target. It therefore is not able to have the equivalent ability to compete with other products that have high level of specialisation in one specific area such as Simplelanguage. The other weakness is the technological and knowledge limitation. It seems that Brrrd has difficulties to create different products that with high level specialisations. For example, it will face a variety of professional language-related problems and technological problems if it decides to transform to be a serious educational content tool.

The opportunity is that with the economic development of China and the phrase of globalisation, the demanding of mandarin language tools continues to increase (The Telegraph, 2014). This offers high level market potential for Brrrd. This stimulates Brrrd to upgrade and modify its duo functions and offer different learning and exercising experience to users.  

The threats is that the major players have established dominated position in the market such as Simplelanguage, which imposes high level barriers for Brrrd to compete with these players and enter into the new market that it is not familiar with.

Question 2

The major problems and challenges for Brrrd are that it lacks a specific market position and target on specific customer segments. This is due to the problem that it lacks high-level of professionalism and specialisation on both of the fun and function aspects of its product. This therefore limits its competitive advantages and marketing functions. The opportunity of the company is that the increasing demanding on mandarin-study tools. This does not mean that increasing number of people need high level professional language learning tools, but means that the tool needs to help them to solve some daily conversation needs when they are travelling to China (The Telegraph, 2014). Thus, the duo-nature of Brrrd has high potential in this market situation.
