Brutus Speech

Campaign Speech (Brutus)

Friends, Romans and Countrymen, please listen to me. As a senator and a military leader, I am here today running for leader of Rome. My name is Marcus Junius Brutus.  My father is M. Junius Brutus the elder and my mother is Servilia.  The virtues of liberty and the defeat of tyrants run strong in my bloodlines.  I promise to bring peace and harmony back to this country. I promise to restore all of Rome. I promise to work together with all of you to build our empire for the welfare of Romans.  I am here today to win your trust and ask for your vote.   Entrust me in your wisdom, and awake your senses, then you will be the better judge.

Unlike my predecessor, I do not want to be a king.  I will simply rule as one of you, the common people of Rome.  Why am I running for this leader position, you may ask?  Why should you vote for me?  The answers came from a common man who once said, “Brutus is noble, wise, valiant, and honor” (3.1.126).  We as Romans need a wise and noble leader. We as Romans will unite together to build our empire so it may thrive for our welfare and prosperity.  We as Romans will finally lead this nation with honor and justice for all.  Rome needs a strong ruler to make changes to its weak and corrupted government under the rule of Caesar.  Think of Caesar as a serpent's egg, when hatched, would grow very dangerous.  “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” (3.2.21-22). What Rome needs is change.  Brutus can bring change.  I can bring change. You just need to trust me. “Believe me for mine honor, and have respect to mine honor that you may believe” (3.2.14-16)

I am a natural born leader and a fierce warrior.  My dear friend Cassius once said about me, “Brutus shall lead and we will grace his hells with the most boldest and best hear of Rome” (3.1.133).  I served as the past Governor of Cyprus and military commander in Cicilia and Macedonia. “Who is here so vile, that will not love his country?” (3.2.34)  I guarantee the safety of you my fellow countrymen. I will continue to build roads to the far reaches of our land to stimulate trade for our growing economy. I will cut taxes for my people. I will give every man and women, no matter how rich or poor, a voice in the government.  I believe it is important to stay humble, unlike Mr. Anthony who lives extravagantly.  Young Anthony “is but a limb of Caesar” (2.1.178), reckless and arrogant.  Do we really need another Caesar? Do we really need another tyrant to suppress us Romans?  I’ll say we need a different leader, someone who is willing to dive into the fire for Rome, someone who can take charge and change this land for the better.  I am the face of your new leader.  The fate of Rome now lies in your hand, your hand it is.
