Melinda’s childhood memories do not indicate that Melinda was happy when she was a child, but now is not very happy. They serve such a greater purpose in the book Speak. Throughout the book, many things happened that made her think back upon her childhood. Most of them, happened to involve Andy Evans. He is the main reason Melinda has all the problems she actually has and has to deal with. Without him, she wouldn’t have these issues, or have to constantly think about her childhood. When Melinda and Rachel were friends, they decided to go to a party, which Andy Evans was at. Melinda met Andy and they started dancing, one thing led to another and Melinda got raped by Andy.
