Ncaa Scamming Their Athletes

Being a Ncaa athlete can be tough especially when they’re making all that money and you get no piece of it. There has been a lot of talk lately about whether the Ncaa athletes should be paid for their duties. There has been speculation that the athletes are already being paid but not in cash. The Ncaa board has come out and said multiple times that the athletes are being paid by having free education and other things on campus. Athletes should be paid for what they contribute to the Ncaa no matter what sport they’re in.

There has been so much talk about athletes getting their share of profits from the Ncaa, also many have brought ideas up to the board of the Ncaa for the athletes to make money. The ideas were putting the images of the athletes on video games, putting the athletes last name on the back of the jerseys for sale, and selling autographs. But unfortunately, those ideas were tossed out the window as soon as they were presented to the Ncaa board. One reason they don’t want to pay the athletes is because they feel as if they are already being paid by having a free education, free meals at the school, and having a coach that can get them to play at the professional level if they want. Now I don’t know about you but to me that doesn’t sound like cash in your hand or money transferred into your bank from the Ncaa. The Ncaa needs to pay their athletes because the athletes do so much for their program from performing big in games and getting to big event games or championship games. The athletes bring in most of the ticket sales and viewers that watch the games.

One thing for sure is the Ncaa has more than enough to pay the athletes.  The Ncaa makes nearly more than one billion dollars over the year from all the sports they have. Also, they have extra money form their endorsement deal they have with the channel network CBS that’s not including that one billion they already have. The Ncaa signed a television deal in 2010 with CBS worth $10.8 billion over fourteen years. A lot of people have said they’re not comfortable with giving an athlete that much. I’m not saying give the athletes one billion dollars, but they could give each individual athlete simply $2,000 a semester or $5,000 a year. That money alone should take care of all that athletes needs like laundry, food, and books. Also, programs could use this paying athletes as a great lesson. They can teach the athletes that are receiving money how to manage their money for the future, especially if that athlete plans to have a professional career in a sport, it will teach them how not to go broke quick. Some say being a Ncaa athlete is not a career and you shouldn’t be granted money for something you’re only going to participate in for 1-4 years, but however many years that athlete spends at whatever program it should be counted for something. Even if an athlete only stays for a year and only gets $1,000. I’m pretty sure that any athlete will be perfectly fine with that.

Most people that are opposed to paying Ncaa athletes always say that they are not professionals and shouldn’t be treated as such. But the thing is they aren’t just going to school to get an education they are also trying to pursue a career in the sport they participate in. If you ask any athlete what their plans are for the future are most likely their answers is going to be go pro. So, if their plans are to be a professional in the near future why not get them prepared for it. Start treating them as if they were pro already by paying them an exceptional amount of money for the sport an athlete participates in. a lot of people say going to college gets you prepared for the real world, being a professional athlete is part of the real world so the Ncaa should get their athletes ready for what’s next.

There has been speculation that the athletes have been getting money but only on road games. There has been little but some news about coaches gathering up some money for their players and giving each player $200 to $300 for however long they are on the road. The way this works is when the team arrives at whatever place they’re playing at on Thursday the coaches on hand them the money before they get into their hotel rooms. After that money gets into the player’s hand there’s no telling what he or she spends it on. Now some players have said that they use the money for extra food or whatever else they need at that point. But other athletes have come out and said they save all the money they get from the road trips and wait till the end of their season to spend it. Even though this is illegal for coaches to give the athletes any kind of money, it’s also a great way to pay the athletes as well and the Ncaa board should look into this and try this method.
