Intercultural Communication

The United States society is segmented into many different cultures. Living in the 21st century as of today we have meshed together and become one. Not one culture but citizens who want the same outcome in life. Putting together different ethnic groups and the cultures that go along with them can put a strain on us as individuals. Comparing the past to the present as of now we gather that immigration is something of the norm. For example blending an Americans culture with someone from India.

I had become acquainted with an old co-worker at the time that was from India. She managed our local doctors office. She interpreted our (Christian/American) views and behaviors as insults. Her beliefs and habits were very different from my beliefs and habits. Most days when arriving to work we would not be allowed make eye contact with her. She also would not allow anyone to shake her hand or disagree with her.

In her country, she was known as a princess. Never having to work to make a living or working in general. She moved to the US with her husband who is a doctor. She was forced to learn how to eat and cook like we do and also she was adjusting to the daily life at a so called "job". Also she would not eat certain proteins such as beef. She would state that the cow in her culture is what her relatives before her are reincarnated into. When we would get lunches from drug companies they would have to bring a separate veggie plate just for her.
