What was your dictator’s childhood and family life like?

He was born in the Russian Peasant village of Gori, Georgia.

He was the son us Besarion Jughashvili, a cobbler, and Ketevan Geladze, a washerwoman.

When he was 7, he had a case of smallpox, leaving his face scarred. And a few years later he was injured in a carriage accident which left one of his arms slightly deformed. Because of these incidents, the other village children treated him cruelly, leaving his with a sense of inferiority.

Joseph began a quest for greatness and respect.

He also developed a cruel attack for those who crossed him.

What are your dictator’s political beliefs?

In 1922, Stalin was appointed to the newly created office of general secretary of Communist Party.

In the late 1920s and early 1920s, Stalin reversed the Bolshevik policy by seizing land given earlier to the peasants and organizing collective farms.

How did your dictator achieve power?

He didn’t really use force, he kind of just moved up the party ladder. Then in 1922 he became secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In 1924, he took out his rivals and won the power.

What type of government?

Communist.

What were the significant aggressive actions taken by your dictator pre-World War II (1920s, 1930s) and during World War II (1939-1945)? Identify and describe a minimum of 5 significant events.

1939- Stalin and Hitler signed a nonaggression pact.

June of 1941- Germany broke the Nazi-Soviet pact and invaded the USSR.

Stalin (at that time) remained there and directed a scorched earth defensive policy.

August 1942 to February 1943- The Battle of Stalingrad, during which the Red Army defeated the Germans and eventually drove them from Russia.

Did you dictator survive World War II?

Yes.

He prosecuted a reign of terror, purges, executions, exiles to labor camps etc…

1949- led the Soviets into the nuclear age.

He grew increasingly paranoid in his later years.

Died on March 5, 1953, at age 74, because of a stroke.
