The Cost of Illegal Immigrants

When illegal immigrants came into the United States in pursuit for a better life, they do not realize the cost it is bringing our government and our true U.S. citizens. Being in our nature, our fellow citizens would gladly help a foreigner if they were in need. None of this would be such a big deal if the money were not such an issue. Everyday U.S. citizens pay taxes for the illegal aliens to use our hospitals and schools to their advantage. Education here in the U.S. is offered to everyone, including illegal immigrants. There are many reasons we should not tolerate illegal immigrants coming into our country and costing taxpayers lots of money. For example, immigrants not receiving an education that come into the United States make our crime rate much higher. Illegal immigrants should not be receiving a free education because it is costing the U.S. a large amount of money, and consequently the taxpayers are the ones who suffer.

When foreigners come into our country and use our schools to their advantage, they are stealing. The truth is sad, especially when these immigrants do not have the same opportunities as we do. Here in the U.S. we have “opportunities,” that foreigners from other countries do not have. What happens when our government offers free education and other countries do not? In his essay, “America Must Take Stronger Measures to Halt Illegal Immigration,” Michael Scott describes the cost taxpayers have to pay in California, “There are 408,000 illegal immigrant K-12 students to educate at a cost to California taxpayers of approximately $2.2 billion annually, for example” (Scott, par. 4). $2.2 billion dollars is a lot of money for only one state to support illegal foreigners. Imagine what we could be using that money for if we did not have the problem of illegal aliens coming into our country. For example, we could use the money we waist on illegal immigrants and spend it on our after school programs. When our governments do away with all the foreigners coming into the states we will be able to progress in our economy and education.

Many other situations come up where we spend money on illegal immigrants. For instance, we pay for illegal immigrant births every year. Michael Scott declares, “Taxpayers subsidize 96,000 illegal immigrant births in statewide county hospitals (200,000 nationally) at a yearly cost of $352 million” (Scott, par. 5). Hospitals are hard to complain about, especially when someone needs the emergency room very badly, even if they are from another country. On the other hand, we are paying too much money for illegal foreigners to live here and make the rightful citizens pay. When are the people of America going to make these people leave? There should be a line between letting a foreigner use our property. If the foreigners should not be in the U.S. and they are here illegally, then they have no reason or permission to use our property. Never the less, someone might be visiting the United States and something happens to come up where they need to use our hospital. Only then should they be able to use our hospitals if they have a proof of I.D. Many times will come up when foreigners have to use our hospitals and schools.

People come from other countries in search for something greater and more thriving. However, we are losing from all of these foreigners coming in and we must try to do something about it. First, we are going to have to protect our borders a lot better. Scott explains, “Three fundamental law enforcement steps must be taken to break the back of illegal immigration. First, our borders must be sealed” (Scott, par. 7). There must be sealed borders in order to keep out illegal immigrants from coming into our communities. Hence, having a strong border patrol helps keep foreigners from crossing into our country.

On the other hand, we as Americans can do much more to take down the illegal immigrants. Here in the U.S. employers help with the problem. For example, Michael Scott implies, “The next crucial law enforcement step is to prosecute employers who hire illegal aliens. The Justice Department is hardly lifting a finger in this area. If there were no jobs, most illegal aliens would leave, or most wouldn’t come in the first place” (Scott, par. 8). If illegal aliens were not offered any jobs here then they would have absolutely no reason to come. The main reason every foreigner comes here to the United States is that they want to make more money. For example, most of the field workers in California get paid
