Course description: This is the first course in the calculus sequence. It satisfies the sequence for majors in Math, Science, or Engineering. Topics include limits, derivatives of algebraic and transcendental functions, applications of derivatives, indefinite integrals, definite integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and applications of integration.
The student learning outcomes: Students will be able to:
- Calculate limits when they exist, and explain why they do not.
- Determine where a function is continuous and /or differentiable, and explain why.
- Compute derivatives of polynomial, rational, algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
- Use techniques of differentiation, including the product, quotient, and chain rule, and implicit differentiation.
Course expectation: This course requires a major commitment of time and effort on your part in order to master the material. Please be aware that an average student should plan on spending 20 plus hours a week studying and completing homework in order to pass this class. Some students may require much more in order to ensure success. Consider carefully whether you are truly prepared for this course, both in background and commitment. Your success will depend heavily on your willingness to work hard on a regular basis.
Attendance: Attend every class on time. Attendance will be taken at each class meeting. Please make every attempt to avoid unnecessary absences as they will seriously impede your progress in this class. Students with excessive absences (more than three) may be dropped from the course. Remember, students wishing to withdraw from the course are responsible for completing the appropriate paperwork. Last day to drop and receive a “W” is on May 2nd .
Homework: To help you practice and master the material, homework is assigned for each lecture. Each week you will be assigned homework through WebAssign. The web address is: www.webassign.com. WebAssign offers a 14 days free trial period, after which you must enter your purchased access code to continue using the site. This site contains an e-book version of the entire calculus textbook and also has additional tutorial resources, such as videos and interactive practice problems. Access for a semester of WebAssign is $75 and can be purchased online at Webassign.com or at the OCC bookstore in a bundled package with the hard copy textbook. Click on register then enter the Class Key occ.cc.ca-8197-2507. Then create your account. Fill in all the information and click on create account. The Homework is due the next time we meet at 11:00am. The homework will be graded.
Quizzes: there will be one quiz a week, also through WebAssign. The quiz will be open on Thursday and will be due on Friday at 11:59pm. You are allowed 2 attempts at each quiz. The quizzes will be timed. The highest score will be your permanent score.
Exams: 5 regular exams will be given. There will be no make-up exams given, nor may exams be taken early, however, each student’s lowest test score may be replaced by their percentage score on the final exam. Exam 1: chapter 2
