Peter and the Star Catcher - Play Review

Peter and the Star Catcher was a fantastic play that younger and adult audiences can enjoy because of the jokes that older audiences can understand, the characters, or the production of the play. I saw the play Saturday and it was my first time seeing this play and was not disappointed, I absolutely loved it. The main points I will address in this critique is the stage, the play, props, characters, and some dislikes.

The play was in the Warren Theatre, the more comfortable theatre, and I sat in the front row on the left side near the band. At first where I sat didn’t seem to be a problem but some of the dislikes come from here because when the music would start playing it was hard to understand what the actors were saying or singing sometimes. Another problem that I faced with my seat was sometimes the props got in the way of me seeing what was going on for example in the second act when all the actors had umbrella’s covering them as they rest, one particular umbrella was in the way of me seeing the facial expression between Peter and Molly as they were sitting down talking about the kiss. I thought the play was fast paced and plot of the story ran smoothly with this pace and there was never a dull moment, and with the play being fast paced it keeps your attention on what is going on instead of losing any focus or becoming uninterested and as I mentioned before that this play can be enjoyed by younger audience, another plus to the play and the plot being fast paced is keeping the younger audience interested because they can have a short tension span and lose focus or interest. The stage was simple which I think was a good idea because it makes you focus on the characters and the props or the actors acting as props which where most of the action occurred along with making the scenes come together nicely and flow nicely with each scene as well. The aspect of the actors being used as props was an excellent choice as it added more humor to the play or creativity that anyone would appreciate for example the actors used as doors, the ladder being used to make Molly float, and how the actors pretended to be water as Molly was rescuing Peter from drowning. Another prop used to add more humor and creativity element to the play was the rope which was used on multiple occasion and used to represent different things such as a mouth of a shark, a room where molly and Mrs. Bumbrake stayed for a while, to represent the ship tipping to one side or the other, a wrestling ring, and of course to tie up someone. Another prop I thought was excellent addition to the play was the light that the actors had attached to their thumbs of finger that was to represent tinker bell, and I really enjoyed the illusion of the tinker bell flying to actors by the actors pretending to the throw the light in the person direction, and transition of the throws were quick and sharp which even helped the illusion come to life.

All the actors in the play were amazing and did a fantastic job portraying their characters and they seemed to enjoy playing them as well. My favorite character’s was Black Stache, Smee, and the actor (Frank Garcia Jr.) who portrayed four characters. For this critique I’ll call them the dynamic duo and I’m referring to Black Stache and Smee because the dialogue and interactions between them was hilarious and honestly was looking forward to seeing them appear on stage because of their funny presence they brought to the play and characters. Frank Garcia Jr., as mentioned before, portrayed four characters and he did an amazing job with them, even with short lines when they were delivered they were hilarious and with his movements or interactions
