Ginger Ale & Fries

That's what I put down under good.

I was never good at drawing

And that was second grade

With Sister Vecolica.

She was old and scary, like in a horror movie.

One day in religion class she gave us homework for the first time.

She handed out a sheet of pa-per.

At the top is "Good", Half-way down was

E V I L

Was mid-way down the page in print

Which the Sister had said: something like the devil.

'Spose to put down what we can think up.

Good and Evil.

I never liked home-work.

Of course, I put Fame down first, that is under good.

And I al-so printed my favorite snack, Ginger Ale and Fries.

And the new priest Father Kind.

Now that's a lot of printing

And be-cause I didn't know any devils

Under bad I drew my picture.

The next day after religion class there was math.

I hated math.

And all that week I got to go to "|Servers Class" instead.

Second Grade was the first you got to go to Altar Boy Server's Class. In Server's Class all the older kids Were complaining about their homework. I told Father Kind I had handed in my first homework

assignment for religion class.

What I put for Good.

He asked me

What's under Evil?

I told him. He laughed and said mine would be the very best one.

Father Kind was awful nice

He said he'd been to heaven twice.

And when he asked for sound advice

Sister Vecolica gave everyone the same grade.

On my sheet she marked an 'X' through Fame.

Next to my work of art she spelled out the letters S-E-E-M-E, but

I didn't know what that meant.

But I was suppose to get the best grade

But every one got the same grade.

And I was pissed

Which was the beginning of my belief structure crumbling down.

But before long I became King Cowboy

Which doesn't mean that I was a King.

Instead I was just a kid on a bike.

My bike was my horse and I wore a cowboy shirt and hat.

And I rode all over town like that.

And that's how I got my nick name.

I called my horse Fame

After my first and favorite bike.

The routine of King Cowboy was pretty much the same each sum-mer.

I could only do King Cowboy in the summer because for sure the other kids

Would make fun of my hat.

But when I was riding Fame in the summer,

That's all I ever, ever wore

That one's Jane's. Yep.

I married my childhood sweetheart.

Already two kids.

Three
