Snakes and ladders or Chutes and ladder is a children’s board game. It is played on a square grid, each small square is marked with a number from 1 to 100. A player starts from 1, roll a single die and then move depending on the number on the die. On the way there are ladders and snakes. Ladders are reward; skip a player to a higher level whereas snakes are penalty leading to lowering in level. Any number of players can play simultaneously and one who reached 100th square earlier is winner.

It was played in the ancient India by the name of MOKSHYA PATAMU. Mokshya is a metaphor for salvation achieved by doing good deeds and Patamu is a metaphor for taking rebirth in a lower form to pursue salvation. It was invented by Hindu spiritual teachers to teach children about the effects of good deeds as opposed to bad deeds. The Ladders represented good virtues such as Generosity, Faith, Humbleness, etc., and the Snakes represented evil virtues such as lust, anger, murder, theft, etc. The moral of the game was that a person could attain Moksha
