Human Cloning

Since 1997, when the first cloned sheep was born, Scientist attempted and successfully cloned other animals. Human Cloning is an experiment where ones person information body was completely cloned. Scientist extract a cell from an individual and removes its DNA to place it on an empty egg cell which then develop into an embryo. Some researchers said that human cloning would cure many diseases and defective genes if this experiment was regulated. However, most of the test have many failures; cloned beings die faster because anomalies such as tumor and infections rates became higher. Also, it would cause a lot of changes in our society and conflict between ourselves. Therefore, the federal government should not conduct this inhumane experiment.

Conducting this experiment results to many flaws while testing a living being which is kind of violate the natural law if it’s using human genes to make cloned babies. As stated by Bioethicist Thomas Murray, “"It is absolutely inevitable that groups are going to try to clone a human being. But they are going to create a lot of dead and dying babies along the way” (Doc#3). To prove Thomas statement, according to “The Science and Ethics of Cloning” by Tim Friend, “Scientists are able to clone sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and mice, but not without significant errors that commonly result in oversized fetuses, placental defects, lung, kidney and cardiovascular problems, brain abnormalities, immune dysfunction and severe postnatal weight gain” (Doc#3) and most of the time only 1% to 10% of these attempts are successful (Doc#1). In addition, cloning a primate -which is related to human structure- became more difficult than cloning other mammals. Thus, it is inevitable to sacrifice a human being, underdeveloped or not, to test this experiment which is not acceptable in the eyes of most people. So this experiment basically ignore nature’s law and for that reason it is illegal.

Though human cloning is not generally forbidden in United States, however, if this experiment were conducted, it will question our uniqueness as an individual, the laws, and it also may reduce our value in human life. As Hon. Sam Brownback, a U.S. senator from Kansas, stated in a hearing about Human Cloning that “Creating cloned live-born children begins by creating cloned human embryos, a process which some also propose as a way to create embryos for research or as sources of cells and tissues for possible treatment of other humans. The prospect of creating new human life solely to be exploited and destroyed in this way has been condemned on moral grounds by many as displaying a profound disrespect for life.” (Doc#2). Many people agreed that using human clones just to be destroyed for the purpose on finding a treatment is cruel. In fact, 90% of Americans are against human cloning according to the CNN poll. In addition, as said by Mr. Clarke D. Forsythe, President, Americans United for Life in the court that “Since extracorporeal human embryos are outside the womb, they are born for legal purposes, and are entitled to the full protection of the law as developing humans.” (Doc#2).Thus, embryos that was created in human cloning are protected by the law therefore it is illegal to experiment them. Also, if a person’s life is easily to be cloned, people would think that their life is not valuable or rare which it may increase suicidal thoughts and crimes. For this reasons, it is better to stop cloning to prevent us from devaluing the meaning of life.

Many researches said that there are many benefits in further research in human cloning. They said it is possible to cure terminal diseases such as cancer, and fix gene defects, but according to other reports it may only cause harm. As written in the “Benefits of Human Cloning” by Simon Smith, Scientists “believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged.” (Doc#4). Which could be also applied to other diseases, for example, cloning bone marrow to cure leukemia and preventing the body’s immune system to reject the transplant. However, there is a possibility that the cloned organs might not sync into the persons aging process. As stated in Pros and Cons in Human Cloning “Because an older cell is often being used to create a human clone, there is the possibility that this imprinted age could be placed on the growing embryo. This would then create premature aging issues and potentially even premature death, all because of the cloning process.” (Doc#1). It is not likely that the transplanted cloned organ may also develop faster which can greatly affect the humans overall health, for example, if the heart aged faster, a healthy teenage boy who got transplanted with this cloned heart may die prematurely. Thus, cloned organs may bring more problems than helping people.
