Today i want to tell you about my favourite breed of dog. Its called the ‘Bavarian Mountain Hound’. I will tell you about the history of the breed and its charachteristics.
So let’s start with the history. Back in the days the dog was used during the quarries. Quarry is the act of hunting animals for sport or food.
As you have probably noticed in the name of the breed there is a term ‘Bavarian’ which makes you think about Bavaria in Germany. In actual fact this dog breed is strongly connected with this country since Germans were the ones who have created this breed.
As I said before back in the Middle Ages quarries were very popular. But the thing is that german people were very picky about loosing an animal once it was shot, it had to be captured. Usually the shot was not good enough to kill an animal, so it was injured but strong enough to run away. So the people needed a dog who would have great sense of smell in order to track down the prey. The Bavarian Mountain Hound was developed in 19th century by crossbreeding Hannoversche Schweißhund breed and hunting dogs from the Montes Alpes. Finally the trappers got their perfect haunting dog.
