Research on Embryonic Stem Cells is controversial. Some Presidents, such as Reagan and Bush, don’t approve, where as others, like Clinton, do.

In order to form an opinion, facts about embryonic stem cells should be studied.

Embryonic stem cells are the stem cells found only in embryos. Stem Cells can divide indefinitely, unlike regular cells. They are not specialized and can transform into any type of cell. They also have a cytoplasm and a nucleus just like a regular cell.

Stem cells are used to repair damaged organs including the brain. It also helps people with Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Irving (2005) there is three ways scientists study stem cells. First is that they analyze them, second, that they get tested in humans with serious medical conditions and third is a special type (hematopoietic) used to save lives. Viegas, J (2003)

But major researchers, companies, and journalists have stated that there is “No need to use human embryonic stem cells at all.” Nigel (2002)

The United States has a mixed view on stem cell research. President Ronald Reagan halted research on human fetal tissue by issuing an executive order in 1988 that prohibited the National Institute of Health from funding this kind of research. (Note that if Ronald Reagan had used Stem cells he would still be alive possibly.) Nancy Reagan and her children are working very hard to change views regarding stem cell research.

The use of stem cells from aborted fetus’s and from surplus embryos created for investor fertilization is an ethical precedent in the harvesting of organ from cadavers for use in transplants. Nigel (2002) they are provided to treat sick people with cancer. Also they have the potential to cure many other diseases.

The three major goals in researching stem cells are. The gaining of important scientific knowledge about embryonic development and its application to related fields. Curing disease such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, stroke, spinal cord injuries, bone diseases etc. Third is screening drugs for pharmaceutical companies, instead of having to rely on animal models. Irving (2005)

President Clinton supported stem cell research all through out his career and so does our current President. California is the only state to have stem cell research legalized. As long as the female approves to have the stem cell extracted from her aborted fetus then it’s legal
