Description of Forbidden City

The Forbidden City, also called Palace Museum or Gulgong in Chinese, is located at the center of Beijing. It was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex. It covers approximately 720,000 square meters. The Forbidden City is surrounded by 3 imperial gardens. Jingshan park in the north, Zhongnanhai in the west, and to the south is Zhongshan Park. The Forbidden City became a world heritage site in 1987 and was declared the “Imperial Palace of The Ming and Qing Dynasties”.

History Of Forbidden City

The Forbidden City has survived over five centuries during the time the emperors ruled. It was during these 500 years that The Forbidden City was considered off limits to the world, even the Chinese. The Forbidden City began construction in 1407 and fourteen years later it had been completed. One million workers and a hundred thousand artisans are believed to have worked on it. Yellow was the color of the royal family which is why most of the forbidden city is covered in yellow. The Forbidden City had been the imperial home of 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
