Essay title: Analysis

Analysis

An advertisement is a notice, such as a poster or a paid announcement in the print, broadcast, or electronic media, designed to attract public attention. Advertisers have the best chance of apprehending attention and affecting communication by appealing to people’s unfulfilled urges and motives in their minds. They use an apparent logical link between an ads emotional appeal and its product information. Most advertisements have two orders of content, the first is the appeal to deep-lying desires and the second is the information regarding the product being sold. Each ad may have more than one appeal, but there is always one major appeal. Analyzing ads may help to familiarize the viewer with seeing past the stratagem contain in the ad by breaking down the symbolized meaning of each ad.

Signs and symbols occur in our everyday life because our culture associates certain things to mean something else, for example, a beautiful woman in a wedding dress would be connected with womanhood. Producers use divergent images that are intended to be processed in a certain way. If we see a picture of a male and female hugging, it makes us associate that with the feeling of happiness, but they are trying to sell a type of body wash. Our perception on how one image should be portrayed is based upon our surroundings, culture, and experiences.

This target audience is women of all ages. The emotional appeal used in this advertisement is the need for attention. I think the consumers infer that if I buy Secret Deodorant, I will have fun and be hot like this woman in the ad.

My second advertisement came from the same magazine and it is an ad for Gottlieb & Sons. They have an extensive collection of fine jewelry and specialize in wedding rings. There is a picture of an attractive, young woman and she is smiling and looking down at her hand. On her wedding finger, there is an impressive engagement ring. The slogan they use is “I said yes!” There is also a picture of the ring super sized in the right bottom corner. This advertisement is appealing to men saying that if they propose to her with a Gottlieb
