Essay title: Critical Analysis of Conflict in Hamlet

The eighteenth-century British novelist Laurence Sterne wrote, Ў°No body, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a manЎЇs mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time.Ў± In the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, OpheliaЎЇs mind is pulled in conflicting directions between compelling desires, obligations, and influences.

Ophelia is torn between her father along with her brother, and Hamlet. OpheliaЎЇs father and brother both caution her to HamletЎЇs advances and advise her to stay away. As Ophelia sees her brother away, Laertes warns Ophelia about the integrity of HamletЎЇs love. He says he might love her now, but she must keep in mind his status as prince and be wary of their relationship. Laertes advises Ophelia to keep the relationship casual and not to taint her virgin youth.

They are both very significant people to her, her brother whom she is close with and trusts dearly, and her father who is also a figure with high status. Already Ophelia feels conflict between herself, her loving brother, and the orders of her father.

Hamlet at this point in the story is already unstable from the recent discovery of the murder of his father by his uncle, and distrusts man, and especially women because of the marriage of his mother and his uncle. Upon all this he begins to be ignored by Ophelia. Later, when he enters her chambers he is seen as visibly shaken, and Ophelia believes him to be heart-broken. Polonius believes this to be the cause of HamletЎЇs madness. Ophelia is tormented by the guilt of the possible connection between her treatment of Hamlet and his madness.

Ophelia is then used as an instrument to spy on Hamlet, to ascertain whether or not she is
