Essay title: Goodbye My Lover (james Blunt)

Goodbye My Lover’

This song tells a story, in fact the artist, James Blunt, says that it’s based on a relationship he was in with an ex-lover. He said that “she meant nothing” to him; but the lyrics and the emotion he sings with begs to differ. It’s set up like most songs, using the a-a-b-b rhyme scheme, but the way he personifies things and allows the reader to actually “see” what he’s singing about.

It starts off where the couple meets and even though the guy knows that they will go their separate ways before they ever start the relationship (“Cause I saw the end before we’d begun”), but because he couldn’t live without her he decided to pursue the relationship anyway. This song is actually more like a flashback; he starts at the end of their relationship with the first two lines then reminisces about how their relationship began in the following four lines. He used figurative language in saying that she “touched” his “heart” and “touched” his “soul”, because she didn’t do it physically, but through her tenderness and love. This infatuation led to a pretty hot and heavy, yet meaningful relationship according to his lyrics about them kissing, cuddling, sharing “dreams”, and sharing “beds”. She became a major part of his world; he knew everything about her from the way she looked to the way she smelled.

Then the chorus cues up, in which he’s telling his lover goodbye. Their relationship is over now, and he’s hurting. She was more than just his lover, she was his friend and she was the “one” for him. The second verse is next, and he says that she took away the dreams that they shared when she walked out his life. Their dreams about them getting married, having children, and everything else. He says that they had some rough times, like most couples, but they worked them out up until the end of their relationship when she left.

He still has feelings for her and still thinks of their time together fondly. He misses her; misses the nights they shared together, their long strolls on the beach engaging in thoughtful conversations while holding hands. And because
