That Day I’ll Always Remember

“Thanks for having my back”, I said as we rode away from the liquor store. “Of course I’m going to have your back, you’re my brother”. “Did you get hit”? “I got hit once in the eye, but its okay”. “Good, I’ve got to go, I’ll be right back, Twon said as we pulled up in front of our house. “Don’t let Momma find out you was drinking and if she does, you weren’t with me”. “Don’t worry about that big Brother, I never get caught”, I said as I drank some more of the Hennessey and got out of the car.

As I walked toward the door my stomach dropped and something told me not to let him drive off. I turned around and he had already pulled away and I knew then that something was going to happen. Immediately, I went in the house and tried to call him, he didn’t answer. For a while, I kept asking myself, “What‘s about to happen?” “Where is he?” I wanted to tell my mother what I was feeling, but when I went into her room she was already praying for him and asking God to spare his life. At that moment, I knew that the feeling wasn‘t coming from me being drunk, something was about to happen to my brother and I couldn’t do anything about it. I couldn’t sleep and I was so drunk that I couldn’t even think straight. My stomach felt so funny, and for the first time in three years, I cried and I cried myself to sleep.

I woke up to a phone ring and I knew then that, that was the call. I didn’t want to get up, I didn’t want to move. The next thing I knew I heard a loud scream, “Oh my God!” I jumped up with tears in my eyes and ran outside, behind me ran out my mother, my sister and cousin. They jumped in the car and without asking any questions I jumped in too. We drove 95 the whole way to Christ Hospital (Chicago) where we went in and saw Twon, my big brother, bloody from gun shot wounds to the stomach and face. I didn’t know what to do or what to say, my body was frozen and I had tears running from my eyes. The doctors rushed him to the back while
