About Dying

By: Sara Bonnett

Book Report 2

The book I chose to do for the book report is “About Dying.” This book was about how children felt during and after death. This book is to “open between adult and child the potential for growth that exists in human beings of all ages.” It is made for parents and children to learn together and children will eventually come and communicate with the parent.

“This book is about everyday dying, the kind your child, every child, meets early in his own life - the kind he must learn to mourn.” Children face death with relatives, animals, and friends. This book states that honesty to the child is the best. Adults need to be understanding and supportive. “Children don’t understand forever, they think dying is reversible and the can come back to life.” Children need to mourn just like adults. Children will learn through death if parents are supportive and honest with them.

Children are curious about death in animals and humans. As adult explain what is happened and “let them see the dead.” Have the children help with animal burials and have them attend the family funerals. When they ask questions, be supportive and patient. “Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” During the burial this is what they said. Let children put alive flowers on the grave of animals and humans, and explain where there soul will go.
