Drinking and Driving Case

Dangerous: able or likely to inflict injury or harm (dictionary.com). According to a journal over drunk driving, “Each year over 10,000 people are killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic deaths in the United States” (“Impaired Driving”). Drinking and driving leads to serious and dangerous consequences that can be the difference between life and death.

Drinking and driving is a serious problem. In a journal, “Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 48 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes total more than $51 billion” (“Impaired Driving”). The amounts of deaths caused almost every minute, seem to birth many more problems. The cost of each accident both emotionally and physically proves the seriousness of drinking and driving. Rendering an article on a website, “Scientists have been able to declare the heavy drinking as even young adults deflects in learning and memory” (Hopson). This discovery may be more serious, seeing as if the youth are drinking at a younger age their brains may have them lead to thinking it is okay to drink and drive. Even the minute situations can lead to more serious problems that have been proven. A serious article said, “Binge drinking can lead to serious health and behavioral problems” (Hopson). Although drinking especially under the age is horrible as is, binge drinking leads more serious matters. Many people who binge drink tend to think it is okay for them to drive under the influence and act a way that is not receptive to others. The problem at hand with drunk driving has always been a serious problem, but has not always been taking as serious as today.

Multiple factors lead into causing people to drink and drive. When people are drinking excessively the brain can do many unhealthy things to their mind. According to Lewis Darcy’s article, “Many teens think at the time they are drunk, they are still able to drive because they are not able to fully understand what is going on” (Lewis). The next day for teens after driving under the influence, if there is a next day regret driving because they realize they could have died or even another person could have. Teens are surrounded by alcohol everyday all over the world and to say the thought has not crossed their mind to drink and drive would be very untrue. The article, “Bad Mix For The Teen Brain” states, “When teens start to drink or drink for the first time, they do not see the harm it does to their bodies immediately” (Hopson). Many teenagers think drinking alcohol and then driving every now and then, will not affect their bodies because they see their peers partaking in the same thing. Drinking affects the brains room to function at full capacity, therefore causing one to do the unthinkable. A informative journal wrote, “A major cause of drinking and driving is peer pressure, particularly where younger people are concerned” (“Impaired Driving”). Peer pressure in any case is wrong and unjust, but when alcohol especially around younger people who are already naive the situation becomes more severe. Teens who are pressured into drinking and driving may already been drunk and adding the pressure of having to drive may cause a situation no one wants to be in. Whether the cause be peer pressure or just one’s own mind thinking they are able to drive under the influence, the effects of that are damaging.

The effects from drinking and driving are severe and potentially life threatening. Not many people know but, “Alcohol remains to be a major factor in fatal crashes” (Lewis). Alcohol being one of the main reasons why crashes occur, just proves the reason why drinking and driving is a serious problem. Fatal, meaning people losing their lives, becomes a scary and unwelcoming situation that needs to be avoided. Many do not understand, though as written, “At all levels of blood
