The service my business will provide is solid waste management. The  

business is located in Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands. The islands have

policy of conservation of natural spaces and the improvement of tourist

resorts. To that end, the Balearic Island authorities have developed The                  

Master Plan for Solid Waste Management in the Balearic Islands (PDRSU).

This plan focuses on recycling which leads to these resources being used in

other sectors. This plan includes efforts to modernize tourist

                                                       accommodations, to legislate for natural areas, and a plan to control  

accommodation supply. ( Lozano and Ray- Maquieira, 2013 ).

The modern waste treatment plan includes door-to-door separation,

incineration, and treatment of solid waste.( Mallorca, 2012 ). Door-to-door

collection allows the recycling of 75% of the total waste on the island. This

gives relief to the incinerator in almost continual operation. The incinerator,

the biggest in southern Europe, was enlarged in 2007. In 2011 the incinerator

burned 542,094 tons on an incinerator capacity of 736,000 tons.(Mallorca, 2012).

The contract for the incinerator is for the next 30 years. If the municipality

reduces or recycles its waste, they still pay for the tons of waste that the

incinerator will not receive. ( Mallorca, 2012 ). The government has cotracted

with a UK industry, Tirme, to handle solid waste. This is a large company that

has been operational since 1997.( Tirme, 2010 ).                              

In conclusion, after researching this market, I would not have started a solid

waste management company on the island of Majorca. I would have

educated myself on the current regulations on waste management. I. would

have studied the island's infrastructure and how it would effect my business.

Two questions I should have asked are: Is the local population ready for

another waste management company? and What would be the environmental
