I would like to talk about conscious design. As designers we could have the power to influence people, we are joining an industry based around promoting brands, products and corporations, and its quite scary. I want to show you that you don’t

have to be a tree hugger to be socially responsible so I want to show

you some work from current designers that make statements about social

issues and show you that politics, ethics and green design

can be not only done well but with

humour, wit and style.

This design deals with the reality of sweatshops, it shows how much money

actual goes into making a piece of clothing and how little the workers earn

from each garment. I quite like that it looks like it could be a page taken from

a muji catalogue.

This is an ad called brainwashing, its designed by a Slovenian graphic

designer, it’s a very subtle image but as you can see it has all the major

television networks of the American media, basically commenting on the

manipulation of the public.

This is another simple design which basically says that the pentagon is synonymous with shedding of innocent blood.

This is a parody of a Calvin Klein advert, taken from a recent issue of

adbusters. as you can see its a mock up Kate moss looking glamorous as ever.

This brings me to Jonathan Barnbrook who has designed and art directed this issue of adbusters back in 2001.

Barnbrook is a British graphic designer who has produced some

really interesting designs mostly dealing with the corporate issues.

This is the first things first manifesto update produced in 2000 in collaboration

with adbusters. This is the billboard that coincided with manifesto, it says

“designers stay away from corporations that want you to lie for them” which

is a quote by Tibor Kalman.

This is a poster designed for the G8 summit. The big question: is economic

progress killing the planet?

This is an image from the globanalization project which deals with the relationship between corporate world and the American government.

I would like to talk a little about recycled papers and soy inks which could help us become more of a greener designers.
