Steps to Become a Cpa in Ny

For the last four years now I have been studying accounting and whenever someone hears I'm going into the accounting profession, almost always the next question seems to be "Are you going to be a CPA?" the alias of Certified Public Accountant, which is without a doubt the most widely recognized credential associated with accountants. Getting your CPA certification opens the kinds of doors that can acquire you into significant jobs in every industry. But becoming a CPA is no "walk in the park", it takes determination and dedication. Unlike other certifications, the requirements vary from state to state. Focusing on New York, being one of the states at the top of the list of highest paid CPA's, this paper will shed some light on what steps to take in becoming CPA certified in NY.

First things first, get your college degree. In New York there are three different education requirements opinions to choose from. Those being and how my degree at Johnson & Wales fits those requirements:

OPTION 1: A minimum but not limited to a bachelor's degree and 120 semester hours in certain fields of education. (JWU 4.5 credit hrs = 3.0 credit hrs for these requirements) ("AICPA")

o 24 semester hours in account: (with courses in accounting principles, cost accounting, federal taxation, and professional auditing)

Principles of Accounting I & II and Lab (8 credit hours)

Intermediate Accounting I, II & III (9 credit hours)

Cost Accounting I (3 credit hours)

Federal Taxes I (3 credit hours)

Auditing (3 credit hours)

TOTAL: 26.00 CREDITS

o 6 semester hours or 4 graduate credit hours in business law:

The Legal Environment of Business I (3 credit hours)

The Legal Environment of Business II (3 credit hours)

TOTAL: 6.00 CREDITS

o 6 semester hours in finance:

Financial Management (3 credit hours)

Advanced Accounting (3 credit hours)

TOTAL: 6.00 CREDITS

o 3 semester hours in business statistics:

Statistics: (3 credit hours)

TOTAL: 3.00 CREDITS

o 21 semester hours in business and accounting electives:

Cost Accounting II (3 credit hours)

International Accounting (3 credit hours)

Fraud Examination (3 credit hours)

Accounting Seminar (3 credit hours)
