Thailand’s corporate social responsibility concern

One of the major statements in the UN global compact is the protection and respect of human rights such as fair treatment in work, upholding an environment of indiscrimination towards individuals in regards to his/her social class, gender, ethnicity, religion, etc. In today’s society consumers do not look on the quality and price alone but also the specifications on how the product was being made, whether the manufacturing source of the purchased product come from unfair treated workers, or underage workers, or utilizing in any unethical practices which are against the UN 10 compact principles, these will cause devastating impact to the country’s or company’s image and reduce overall performance as complains and boycotts will eventually follow. The article stated Thailand’s negligence on human traffic have caused its foreign customers especially in Europe which emphasizes strong ethical work and human conditions to possibly draw back its decisions to buy goods and other services form Thai firms costing up to $700 million. The phenomena of corporate social responsibility is now in the midst of developing countries especially in Asia, as in the past CSR was not that influential or crucial in day-to-day decision making but now almost all major firms around Asia are changing its company’s policies and actions in order to meet the expectation of a socially acceptable performance. Although the progress of CSR in Asia is gaining speed nevertheless there are still frequent negligence of such matters such as the hiring of underage workers, bribing and corruption and not prioritizing the importance of environment protection. Thailand must re-address its anti-human trafficking methods and Thai corporations must adopt the UN’s 10 compact principles in order to have the trust of customers and stakeholders around, without complying to CSR companies and various organizations will eventually not survive the long-term.
