The Chosen

The movie The Chosen is about two young Jew boys named Danny and Reuven which are experiencing modern day teenage pleasure which are movies, college and parties. This movie also explores Judaic politics and struggles about teenage life with religion. The religion Judaism has a lot to do with this movie because it shows how some Jews can be so in tuned with their culture and traditions whether they are from different groups of Judaism.

The first character sketch is based on Reuven. Reuven is an Orthodox Jew which means that he is very faithful and strict about his religion. Reuven was the narrator for the movie. He was a curious outsider looking in on the modern world. Reuven begins to widen his perspective on the world and also intensifies his empathy for others and broadens his intellect even more while the movie took place. Reuven is nice and caring that is very loyal to Danny and his friends and takes his religion very seriously. He treated his elders with respect and his fellow mates with that same respect he has for his family. Reuven was one of the main characters in the movie he had shown Danny some different traditions and vise-versa.

The second character sketch is Danny’s father. He was a charismatic group leader of Hassidic Jews who study the Talmud and structure whose lives are around ancient European customs. He was a strong political man that knew how to fight for his religion and his rights. He treated people with respect and like everyone was equally. The impact he had on the story was the rift that began between Danny and Reuven, This occurred because Reuven’s father, Mr. Malter, started to fight for Jewish homelands which caused a rift between the two boys. Another reason this happened was because Danny’s father disapproved of his opinion and his action so Danny and Reuven stopped talking to one another for a couple of months until the state of Israel became fact.

This theme is about tradition vs. modernity, this involves religious factors because in the Jewish faith it is about traditions and how they must be done, this religion is also strict because certain traditions have to be done seriously. Being modern in the Jewish faith is unacceptable because in order to experience the modern life you have to break some
