My Dream Today

In Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have A Dream,” King talks about his dream for America. If King were alive today he would think his dream has been mostly realized. For the most part, blacks have achieved racial equality through nonviolent ways. There are many reasons why being a minority in America today is much better than forty years ago.

In the 1960’s a hate crime was as common as shoplifting is today. There were too many hate crimes back before the civil rights movement to list. These include many black beatings, lynching and even King’s own assassination. Blacks sometimes couldn’t even go into the same restaurants as whites, but things are much different today. Hate crimes are a federal offense and punished very harshly. This turns many people off from getting involved in them.

America is much better off today and King is looked at like a hero. King was one of the few men in the 60’s to step up and take a stand against racial injustice. Today, King has schools and parks named after him and even memorials. Nobody would have thought that King would be as popular as he is today back in the 60’s.
