Issue at Hand: My roommates don’t give enough attention to hygiene and cleanliness in our apartment

I have an inclination towards cleanliness in house hence I always keep my room and bathroom clean. After observing the ignorance of my working roommates towards cleanliness and lack of self initiatives, I decided to have a conversation with them in a warmly and friendly manner on a Saturday morning post breakfast when everyone is at home relaxed (safe place). Cleanliness is a continuous team effort and I needed on-going commitment hence I ensured I keep the conversation safe and productive to ensure everyone’s participation.

I had a discussion with both my roommates and inquired about their viewpoints with having cleanliness in the house. They were very receptive, vocal and discussed the possible hazards of not having required cleanliness in the house. Moreover they also pointed that we should all participate. To this I explained them that I fully understand that they are working professionals and busy during the whole week.  I also said that we are lucky to get such a nice society and apartment where things are so clean, however it is important to maintain the same way within the house. After getting their buy in on the initial idea, I opened the floor for suggestions on how best we can ensure we ensure cleanliness. One of the roommate initially suggested that we should call in the cleaning staff every month and get the house cleaned. To this, the other roommate said, that while it’s ok to get this done and paying the required cost, we should still do small things that we can. I ensured I inquire about the time devotion each one can make for the collective effort and decide a common time. They all agreed to devote time over weekend. Also, seeing this as an opportunity to make my suggestion, I proposed to do cleaning of kitchen, doing vacuum cleaning periodically (on weekends), cleaning toilets and disposing garbage every alternate night. They readily agreed to all this and we implemented it on the same weekend. I thanked my roommates for being so supportive of this idea.
