Total Quality Management & certification

Total Quality Management is a strategy developed in order to ensure good quality standards in the organizations process whether they may be manufacturing or service industries. The basic aim of this strategy is to minimize costs while seeking to improve quality by regular evaluations of products and services while making continuous refinements in order to improve it. It seeks to maintain a high level of consistency in goods and services produced by an organization, so that all customers are having a similar experience with their end product or service.

The term was originally formed by U.S. Naval Air Systems Command to describe a Japanese style of management to improvement in quality. There have been many process developed for total quality management and recently even university degrees are available specializing in this field. The implementation of such a process can reduce variations in process outputs and also production and other business processes can be measured, analyzed and improved.

One of the best used process is using what is known as the Six Sigma Quality process that was developed by Motorola Corporation by Bill Smith in 1986. Although the initial idea had come up by Motorola, it had been successfully implemented by General Electric under Jack Welsh as GE had a company policy of being in the top 2 companies in whatever business they have entered.

Why do companies use such a process?

Companies had begun implementing the process as a means to benefit the customers who are using the goods and services of a particular organization. Lots of companies have begun implementing these processes to improve their production and service process and it has seen with improvements in factors such as low costs, standardization of products.

Today we shall take a look at how GE has incorporates the Six Sigma strategy into its working environment. Six Sigma has changed the way that GE works nowadays, and it has even become the way they work in all aspects of the business and has in fact become their corporate culture of how they operate where they aim for ZERO Defect.
