Poverty is a growing issue caused by unemployment, structural adjustment, inequality, corruption, etc. The United Kingdom, and countries all around the world must face the challenge of producing jobs and employment opportunities for their residents in order to strive and prosper. Poverty is consuming the chance of survival for many of these poor citizens due to unemployment (half the world lives on two dollars per day) and other factors. This has resulted in a lack of basic access to food, water, health, education and other important social services. This, in turn, becomes a major obstacle to equitable development. The united nations has responded to this concern with Millennium Declaration which was determined to decrease poverty and hunger in September of 2000. The UN also contributed to the cause with the World Summit of 2005 which took on the challenge of achieving the “Millennium Goals” by the year of 2015.

The United Kingdom recognizes the severity of the situation with it’s unemployment rate at 5.4%. The United Kingdom continues to succeed in its attempts to reduce the unemployment rate. Over the past two decades, the United Kingdom has greatly decreased public ownership and contained the growth of social welfare programs. It has also contributed to the situation by adopting the Millennium declaration along with the other member states. The UK also supported the World Summit of 2005. The United Kingdom has made progress on issues such as increasing the overseas development assistance budget and calling for an immediate increase in resources through the International Finance Facility, influencing multilateral agencies, supporting the EC, and partnering
