CREATING AND MAINTAINING GOOD ORDER AND DISCIPLINE (GOAD)

PURPOSE:

- This BBP is an executive summary on creating & maintaining GOAD within the military--a requirement for the Military Commander & the Law elective class

BACKGROUND:  

- Creating and maintaining GOAD is a top priority for every commander and is crucial to promoting morale, esprit de corps and mission accomplishment

- GOAD is an optimal organizational state that is influenced by leadership, rooted in a positive org culture & is necessary for promoting morale, esprit de corps & mission accomplishment

DISCUSSION:

- To create & maintain GOAD within the military, effective leadership is required

     --Three important leadership characteristics required to create an orderly & disciplined unit are:  communication, trust & leadership by example

- Organizational culture is a key strategic factor in predicting behaviors within a unit  

     -- An organization‘s culture has a controlling effect on the behavior and can influence individual/group norms by its mission and core values  

     -- A unit’s mission defines the organization’s purpose and identity by providing a framework that keeps the unit focused on its goals, objectives, and core competencies
