A main thesis of the film is that Calogero needed both his biological father (Lorenzo) and his adoptive father (Sonny) to survive the streets.

In A Bronx Tale Calogero not only needs both Sonny and Lorenzo but he is caught between them. They both have two almost exactly opposite ways of viewing things, neither completely wrong nor right. Since he was a child Calogero looked up to his father yet he still couldn’t help but try to mimic Sonny. They were sort of a ying and yang of life. Calogero wanted the best of both of those worlds. The conflict started to happen when the two worlds collided and he started to defy his father Lorenzo to follow Sonny and what he thought was right for him.

For instance even when he was young and he was sneaking to the Sonny’s hang out to work for Sonny. He and Sonny felt he earned the money he worked for but his father didn’t want him to have anything to do with Sonny or, what his father considered dirty money. Lorenzo made Calogero return the money which needless to say didn’t go over easy with him. Even Calogero’s mother wanted to keep the money and that just enraged Lorenzo even more.

Throughout the story as different as Lorenzo and Sonny were they both wanted the same thing for Calogero. They wanted him to stay out of trouble, stay away from his punk friends, and get an education, which meant going to college. This made it hard for Calogero to try and choose between the two because they both had good intentions.

Lorenzo told Calogero not to trust Sonny that Sonny doesn’t trust anyone and neither should he. Calogero didn’t
