CRAMPED DELHI AND ITS MARRIAGES

In November, Delhi begins to feel the cold. But this change of environment is welcomed by many of the marriages happening around almost every locality of Delhi. Some are fat marriages of rich people in five star hotels with exorbitant amount of money spent on each thing from decoration to food arrangement. Some celebrities are also invited to attract the spotlight and various other dramas take place. Some are low budget marriages with few guests’ arrangement in the brides’ house itself. But what is so special about the marriages of Delhi? These marriages and their guests clearly show the picture of Delhi and the lifestyle of the people living here.

On 14th November some Vermaji came to my neighbor Sharmaji to give him the invitation card of his daughter’s wedding. Vermaji was in so much hurry that he even misspelled the name of Sharmaji. On one hand, Vermaji was flaunting by telling Sharmaji about the number of cards he had to distribute. On the other hand, Sharmaji was offering all kinds of dishes and comforts he had in his house. As soon as Vermaji left, all members of Sharmaji’s family gathered to check the type of sweet and card, Vermaji offered as invitation. Chintoo, Sharmaji’s son, said invitation card seems to be around of Rs.30 to Rs.40. Sharmaji’s wife interrupted by saying that my father distributed the card of Rs.50 for my marriage 10 years back. Sharmaji tasted the sweet and twisted his face in sarcasm.

The wedding day of Vermaji’s daughter arrived. According to Hindu Astrology, it was one of the most suitable day for the wedding. There were wedding ceremonies happening all around the Delhi on that day. The whole Delhi was sparkling from bright lights. The fragrance of fresh flowers was filling the whole Delhi. But thousands of marriages created a mess on every road of Delhi. Every banquet hall, community hall and farmhouses were booked. Sharmaji’s family was stuck in their new i20 car on GT Karnal Road, where in one of the farmhouses Vermaji was hosting the ceremony. There were so many receptions on both sides of the road. But somehow Sharmaji reached the venue.

On the venue, called Rohan Villa, a brand welcome was going on. Huge numbers of guests were coming and were welcomed by rain of roses
