Domestic Airline

CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND AND HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE INDUSTRY

Nowadays everyone wants to go to places faster safer and cheaper. This is our mentality when it comes to transportation. We want these qualities for us to be satisfied. For example when a person wants to go to the provide they will ride varieties of transportation like bus, boats and trains while in fact they can go to the airports and ride an airplane to go to our respective destinations or province. Studies show that many people prefer to ride an airplane because they feel safer and they can arrive in their destination faster. And also this mode of transportation (airplane) is the fastest transportation to go to other countries. Other than that there is the boat which you will ride for days while on the airplane you can arrive to your destination within hours. You might ask. Where or how did the airplane start? and when did it offer its services? Well. The airplane started In 1799; Sir George Cayley set forth the concept of the modern airplane as a fixed-wing flying machine with separate systems for lift, propulsion, and control. Cayley was building and flying models of fixed-wing aircraft as early as 1803, and he built a successful passenger-carrying glider in 1853 and later developed in 1894 with Sir Hiram Maxim who improved its performance. Now airplanes are not just found in streets it has its own airlines. Airlines provide the offer of air transport. In the Philippines there are 3 well known airlines namely Cebu Pacific Air, Pal Express or Air Philippines. There are other airlines like Zest Air and Tiger Air. Air services started at 1916 with a person called George Holt Thomas. It can only carry two passengers. After that British competitors were quick to follow. They established Handley Page Transport in 1919 and have the capacity to carry 19 passengers flight from London to Paris. Then it was followed by many countries while making it carry more passengers in one flight. In the Philippines the first domestic airline was the PAL or the Philippine Airlines founded in 1941. Cebu Pacific founded in 1988.  Air Asia in 1993. Then PAL Express founded in 1995. Tiger Air Philippines founded in 2003. Sky Jet founded in 2005.

Browsing PAL’s website, Philippine Airlines was founded in 1941 and led by Andres Soriano Sr. together with other group of business men. Formerly known as Philippine Air Lines, it is flagged as the carrier of the Philippines and is the oldest airline operating not only in the Philippines but in Asia. In the website, it stated that the Asia’s first airline took its first flight on March 15, 1941 between Manila and Baguio. Even though the Philippine airline is new it suffered interruptions of its services for the year 1941 to 1945 due to World War II. The disruption of the Pacific War caused their pilots to offer a military service. It helped the American fighter pilots to be evacuated to Australia. After five years of hiatus, on February 15 1946, Philippine Airlines resumed its operations. Due to the war, the airport was heavily wrecked but was also renovated and improved that caused over one million pesos. Being the one of the largest airlines, it also has a share of major breakthroughs. In 1997 the Asian financial crisis made it one of the corporation’s biggest problems. Being greatly affected by the financial distress the Philippine airlines was forced to cut their offered flights to Europe, Middle East, and other international and domestic operations except flights managed in Manila causing to lessen their flights and firing thousands of employees. It was year 1998 when they went back to their normal operations. Second to the list is Cebu Pacific Air, registered as Cebu Air Inc. It offers both domestic and international flights based in Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Cebu Pacific is a minimal effort bearer taking after to a vast degree the idea known from other such bearers far and wide. Cebu Pacific Air was established on August 26 1988, the airline started its operations on March 8, 1996 but was temporarily postponed its operations for a month because of an accident. It actually started with just 24 domestic flights every day but grew to 80 daily flights in 18 different domestic destinations in 2001.  Even the successful Cebu Pacific Air can’t avoid having incidents and accidents. It was on February 2, 1998 when the flight from Manila to Cagayan de Oro crashed on the slope of Mount Sumagaya in Misamis Oriental, killing all 104 people on board going to the airport of Cagayan de Oro. June 2, 2013, Cebu Pacific Flight 971, an Airbus A320-200 convey 165 travellers inbound from Manila, ran off the runway at Francisco Bangoy Global Air terminal and agents have discovered the reason was likely human blunder. There were no fatalities, however the plane was intensely harmed, and traveller endured wounds. Cebu pacific is a subsidiary of JG Summit Holdings and is currently led Lance Gokongwei, Chairman of the JG Summit, possible beneficiary of John Gokongwei, the executive emeritus of JG Summit.
