CBGB’s is one of the most famous and highly regarded music venues in the world today. Having been open for 32 years, this humble looking establishment at 315 Bowrey has become what is known by many as “The home of underground rock music”. However, it greatly saddens me to think that this iconic landmark is currently facing a very real threat of closure due to a lot of various issues currently being debated in a court, who’s final decision will ultimately determine the fate of this venue.

Even though I feel it to be a great loss that the physical existence of the club itself faces the possibility of closure, I find it an even greater loss to think of the destruction of all that the establishment symbolizes. For time and time again it just seems to me, that there is just no more room for the sounds of the underground in today’s sensationalist society. I say this because in my honest opinion, most music making it into the mainstream nowadays is the most unintelligent assortment of arrogant lyrics and repetitive rhythms imaginable.

Don’t agree with me? Well then just listen to the lyrics of the #2 single in the US charts for the year 2003 “get low” by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. Which are not only simple and meaningless but are also so profane that it would be completely inappropriate to quote them in this article.

The music, although admittedly very catchy is once again very simple and still confined to the stereotypical sounds of today’s mainstream music. The problem is, that with all these musicians being placed under pressure to conform to these strict guidelines of writing music. It means that the industry has no way to progress or evolve through time, and sadly it seems that any musicians that incorporate intelligent aspects of music into their songs are simply chewed up and spat out by the ever spreading plague of pop culture.

As of late I’ve been going to watch as many live shows as possible in order to show my support for the musicians whom I respect and admire for adhering to their individual styles and sounds, and not conforming to fit
