Time Management

Millions of Americans suffer from unhealthy stress levels that can lead to fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, chronic pain, insomnia, depression and anxiety. It can also lead to life-threatening problems such as strokes or heart attacks. With the appropriate time management skills and tools, stress can be manageable and reversible.

Time is a precious commodity and it doesn’t change. There are only 24 hours in a day. Time management skills allow you to beat work overload, increase effectiveness, achieve more in your personal and professional life, and significantly reduce stress and anxiety. Investing in these skills will help you save time and better focus on the task at hand.

In order to be effective in your personal and professional life, time management skills are essential. At the very core of these skills is a crucial shift in focus. Many people spend their days in frenzy but achieve very little because of poor time management.” (Mindtools.com 1995-2008) Just because they are busy and getting things done doesn’t necessarily mean they are accomplishing anything significant.

By identifying how you spend your time, you can determine what changes need to be made in order to meet your goals, both short and long- term. Time management skills allow you to concentrate more time on your prioritized tasks. People often procrastinate when they should be focusing on their main task. They usually procrastinate because they are overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin. By procrastinating, you are investing in the wrong task and you will find little or no time left for the important things. Time management skills assist you in prioritizing tasks so you can overcome your hesitation.

To become an excellent time manager you must be organized. Having a place for everything and keeping it there helps to stay organized. Finding a proper place to work on your task or project frees you from distractions so you can make the most of your time. Everyone is unique so it is important to develop and maintain a personal, flexible schedule that works for you.

Writing things down is also very beneficial. Do not rely on your memory because this can lead to information overload and actually increase your stress level. Whether you use pen and paper or personal digital assistants, making a list and prioritizing your projects makes it easier to schedule and keep track of appointments and deadlines. Carrying a notebook with you at all times is a good idea because you never know when you might have a great idea or gain insight related to your tasks.

Planning is also a key element of time management. Setting aside some time every day to work on your most important goal is crucial for success.
