Gender Expansion Essay

In todays day and age gender is very important topic; it is connected to identity in a way because of its uniqueness.  Gender roles are still a big part of the United states and our society has not yet adapted to the idea of being liberated.

Our society continues to be a gender specific role society.  Although we are adapting to a more liberated society, we still continue to encourage gender roles.  The women are still expected to stay home with the kids and take care of the house, while the men are working to provide for their families. In the article “woman are better than men” the authors state,”this pointed to the existence of a general public belief or stereotype which assumes that there are gender differences in multitasking and that these differences are in favor of women”. Gender roles are still going to dominate the united states in 50 years; the reasoning for it is because there is always going to be people of many different cultures here in the United States.  Every culture is different, and even if we americans can adapt to a world without gender roles and stereotypes other people raised in these other cultures are still going to continue to follow gender roles.  Living in a gender role society is inevitable.

The gender roles in the United States do not only include personal and at home life, but also professional life.  Men are still getting paid higher wages than women are.  An example would be how in some places women aren't accepted or hired because only men can do that job.  We are shocked to see when there are women working in construction.  Why?  I believe it is because even if we try to stay away gender stereotypes and go against society we still follow them. “Indeed, while acknowledging that gender is an important part of identity, scholars have warned of the problems that arise in assuming commonality of characteristics and experiences based on gender” (Bristor and Fischer 1995).  We can't escape them.  Whether we are born a man or a woman, we will always have to follow the roles we are given.  There is always a way to go against them but we are predestined to follow them.
