These slides provide the reader with an overall picture of what leadership in today’s society should look like or reflect. Leaders who want to make a profound impact must be flexible and able to motivate their group. An effect leader has a duty to be up with the changes times. The leader needs to be familiar with the school cultural in order to be successful. Leaders today have to be willing to collaborate and be part of a team.

There are many characteristics and skills of effective leaders. Some of these are stated in the first slides and I restated them above. Others are the idea that leaders need to sometimes know when to let others do some of the work. Also leaders know where to go if they need consultation. The set goals for the group and are flexible and willing to adjust when needed. Leaders are knowledgeable in their field. A leader needs to possess great people skills. Be able to take risks and motivate others to day the same is a great aspect of a true leader.

University of Michigan Research says that leaders are need to be very employee focused. There would be nothing without the employee’s input and teamwork.

When I read though these lesson from Colin Powell I am astonished to see how many there are. Through reading this I also could not help but reflect on those lessons I might be struggling with and think of ways I can tackle these areas. When I think of my current principal however, I can’t help but notice she is somewhat lacking in several of these areas. I will cut her some slack and say that she does posses several of them but she does however struggle in two that I can’t get out of my head. One of them is Lesson One and the other is Lesson Twelve. Below I will expand on how I believe my principal struggles with these two important lessons.

In regards to Lesson One: “Being Responsible Sometimes Means _________ People Off.” My principal doesn’t follow this at all. She is so apprehensive about making a decision in fear of making someone mad, the decisions often don’t get made. We just have meetings after meetings to discuss options or plans. Then we have more meetings to discuss which option or plan is best. Teacher are getting very frustrated by this process and don’t want to offer any suggestions for fear they will lose yet another of their plan time. We waste so much time in meetings doing this that it feels as if nothing is getting done. No decision is ever come to and don’t expect my principal to make one. She just wants to keep the peace with everyone and make everyone happy. Little does she know her indecisiveness on certain issues is getting on everyone nerves.
